Curatorial Statement

On May 16th, 2011, mo.ë hosts the biggest painting exhibition in town to date: A new generation of Viennese painters– more than thirty artists – use the 1000m² space to show their canvases: Figuration and abstraction, from small to medium to huge formats, narration and its modes of denial – and all the many gradations in between.

The titel, Before the movies, paintings were like the movies, is a reference to an essay by Susan Sontag: What is painting today, how is is perceived today, in a world of moving images?

How sedating, how much sensory overload, how touching, how divers and yet alike can young contemporary painting be?

The unusual high density of displayed works creates a panoptic, latent psychedelic view on the possibilities of the medium.
